Asti Spumante Event

Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2012 by winesocietyunlv

Greetings, Folks!

University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) – Singapore Campus’s Wine Society is honoured to collaborate with Italian Wine Club, premier Italian wine distributor, to host this Italian Wine Tasting Event. With the help of Mr. Sandro Giorgi, Director of Italian Wine Club, we had the opportunity of having Mr. Alessandro Boido, an award winning Moscato winemaker and Ca’D’Gal vineyard owner, to share with us his experiences such as the uniqueness of the Italian soil and not forgetting the lead, tasting of the 2011 Lumine Moscato D’ D.O.C.G. and 2011 Asti Spumate D.O.C.G.

To go along with the lovely wines, Wine Society has specially prepared cheese platters and servings of almonds and cashews to clear the palates in order to taste the distinctiveness of the two wines that are proudly sponsored by Mr. Sandro.

Wine Society’s members had the chance to network with industry players, gaining insights of the world of wines and were exposed to external interview by Stomp. You can find the article at http://youthphoria.stomp.com.sg/breaking_news/article/2792.

With each event, everyone learn new things and expose ourselves to different wines. It was indeed a spectacular night for all! Do come join us, looking forward to seeing you guys!

Your wait to be a sommelier is over!

UNLV Wine Society is finally collaborating with industry professionals (wine masters, chief sommeliers, business owners…) to bring you a series of fun & serious learning to learn the industry trade secrets!

These skills have been painstakingly acquired over years of experience, and numerous amounts of time and money spent on certifications. We are now offering YOU the opportunity to get a slice of it for a fraction of the price, and even secrets unfound in textbooks!

Open to all UWS Members only, this workshop will be conducted monthly (2-3 hours per session), over a period of 4-5 months. During this time, you can expect to learn all aspects about vinification, pairing, blind tasting, wine knowlege, sommelier service, wine storage, and the list goes on…

Each session is expected to cost a maximum of $25-$30. Do note that this price is a bargain and heavily subsidised by generous industry suppliers who are truly passionate about wines.

Indicate your interest today to lynettesaw@gmail.com – places are limited, passionate beings are most welcome.

Comment below on what you would like to learn and gain from the workshop – and we will definitely try our best to work around your requests!

Freshness Burger Wine Pairing

Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2012 by winesocietyunlv

Warmest Greetings, Members!

The pairing of wines and burgers was a success! Special thanks to our guest speaker Mr. Lam Fook Ping, Bodegas Torres Wine Scholar 2010, and Mr. Wesley Goh, General Manager at Freshness Burger Singapore, for the inaugural collaboration with Wine Society.

Our members had the chance to pair 1853 ESTD Hardys, a sparkling Australian Wine, 2010 Chardonnay (Pierre Henri), and 2010 Merlot (Pierre Henri) with Freshness Burger’s specialties. Upon Mr. Wesley’s kindness, we had a wide selection of food to pair with the lovely wines. Out of the widespread of mains and sides, the emerging winner was the hot dog!

I believed our members have enjoyed as much as we do. Do come join us for our next event!

Sangria Making Workshop

Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2012 by winesocietyunlv

It was a night of lightheartedness and fun amidst the looming examinations and project submissions.

Despite the busy time of the term, passionate members of the UNLV Wine Society (UWS) got together. This time – we ditched the heaviness of serious wine pairing and decided to pick up Sangria making! Again, Mr Gerald Lu graced us with his presence to teach us the art of this Spanish beverage.

Armed with fresh seasonal fruits, Spanish wine, brandy and bar tools, the members got down to a night of friendly competition with the drink! The groups were judged on 5 components – the winning team being Romance D’amor! Congratulations to the team!

Apart from learning the short history and information about this interesting beverage, the students spent the night chatting and drinking away in the Hospitality Creativity Lab, trying each group’s take on Sangria.

Join us for future events and learn more about such useful party drinks!

Wine Retreat 2011

Posted in Uncategorized on March 20, 2012 by winesocietyunlv

Greetings, members!

It has been a long while since we have updated our blog, but believe me – UNLV Wine Society (UWS) has been no less than exciting for the past semester or so. We ushered in the new members in November for the Wine Retreat, with a strong participating crowd of over 60.

There were fun and games, couple with serious learning about wine service, etiquette, glass polishing, uncorking and blind tasting. We also had the pleasure to have Mr Gerald Lu (former Indochine Sommelier) as our guest speaker to introduce the basic concepts of wine culture, and being a sommelier as a career. We definitely suspect that many students were swayed to consider it as a future career prospect, judging from the questions that swarmed Mr Lu!

We hope that new friends were made over the event, and new things were learnt. It is absolutely as simple as that. Do not forget to say “hi” when you bump into fellow members around campus!

Stay tuned for further updates on other events.

Huatitaliano

Ever celebrated Chinese New Year (CNY) by savoring your CNY goodies accompanied with Italian wines?

On 18 January 2012, UNLV Wine Society (UWS) made this year’s CNY special by organizing an event – Huatitaliano! The event brought members to celebrate the CNY together. It was a unique CNY gathering because we did more than just enjoying the local CNY goodies. Our members got to enjoy their CNY goodies with italian wines as well!

Mr. Sandro Giorgi, our guest speaker from the Italian Wine Club, whom is also an italian wine distributer, was invited to share knowledge on his italian wines and how we could best pair our local CNY delicacies with the italian wines. The Italian Wine Club has a portfolio which boasts many exclusive award-winning italian wines. It was an honor to have Mr. Sandro Giogi to educate our members, and to celebrate CNY with all of us that night. A few staff from the UNLV Singapore Campus were also invited to grace the evening.

The event started with a presentation by Mr. Sandro Giorgi, which gave us many interesting facts about italian wines. As he moved on during the presentation, there were different phrases where we were asked to drink different wines to match different CNY goodies. We were first asked to taste a red italian wine together with one of the most popular CNY goody Singaporeans adore: Barbequed pork (Bak kwa). Another white italian wine was then poured for members to taste together with CNY goodies that were not so heavy in taste. There were 4 CNY goodies provided for everyone to match their wines with that day: Bak kwa, pineapple tarts, kueh bangit and prawn rolls. The last wine that was poured for everyone, Asti, was the favorite amongst all our participants. It is a sweet wine which is most ideal for beginners. Mr. Sandro Giorgi kindly allowed partipants to purchase Asti – the sale for that particular wine was so good that orders had to be taken and the wines to be collected on another day!

All participants of Huatitaliano had a great fun tasting CNY goodies together with italian wines that day! UWS would be looking forward to organizing more of such events so that members can get together and have fun at the same time.

Till then!

Wine For Asia 2011

Last 27-28 October, Asia once again had its most comprehensive wine exhibition, Wine For Asia (WFA) at the Suntec Singapore! The event showcases extensive wine seminars, distinguished wine makers, displays and sells exclusive wines. Last year, the event attracted cose to 4,000 visitors from 39 countries!

ImageImage

Some members of our Wine Society were privileged to be able to take part in this networking and eye-opening event. This event allowed them to network with other wine producers/makers/businesses, broaden the knowledge of wine and they also learnt what is best paired with most wines as most of the exhibits had finger snacks which allowed pairing with the wines.

There were different categories/segments of the Suntec hall that exhibited different popular wines from different regions and countries. Some countries included Italy, France, Africa, Taiwan and Australia. Members had the opportunity to taste these wines and could determine which wines suited their taste buds more.

This event allowed members to gain greater insights of the wine industry. Our members had fun interacting and one another and with the exhibitors as well. There would be more of such events coming up that allows members to take part, so do stay tuned!
